Our motive and mission -

Americans have lived during a historical interval that offered more participation in decision-making and more prosperity for more people than in any previous age or place. It was the age of the common man. We in the Democratic Party are coming to our fellow citizens with a fear and a warning – that this age of the common person is being closed. Power and wealth are once again, as in former times, being concentrated into the hands of a few. And this unraveling of the American Dream is happening rapidly.

We are being divided over emotional issues of sex and religion while our fundamental freedoms and securities are being quietly taken from us. To stem this tide, and then to reverse it, is our common goal. We call on all Americans to unite in defense of our common liberty and fortunes.

We hope to revive, first locally then nationally, the Committees of Correspondence that served as both think-tanks and activist agents of change in the 13 colonies leading up to the institutionalization of our freedoms in 1776.

Our goals are four-fold:

1) To serve as a meeting point for the various progressive organizations on Cape Cod. We are not suggesting any form of unification, but cooperation and mutual support. We propose monthly or bi-monthly public forums in which the various environmental and human rights organizations take rotational turns presenting their issues, proposals and needs to the community at large. At such events, we should all show up, get to know each other, and take heart from our collected strength.

2) To serve as both a prod and an assist for the local Democratic Party which will not be an effective party of opposition to the Bush agenda until it offers a coherent vision of its own. So we will challenge our local Democratic Party to respond to the collected voices they will be hearing… and if they do, to further energize it with our support.

3) Together, to develop the ingredients of a progressive vision for America. For coherence, we’ll be organizing our efforts into five subject areas of inquiry:

   a) Fairness in America… how do we guarantee a decent life - that meets at least the basic needs and offers at least a measure of security – for all Americans?

   b) Reacting to terrorism… How do we best secure our national safety in an increasingly complex and dangerous world?

   c) Living a sustainable life… How do we live well, but within our environmental means?

   d) Protecting faith from government… How do we protect our faith institutions from exploitation by clever politicians?

   e) Protecting our democracy itself… How can we reverse the corruption of our electoral system by black box voting machines and party-dominated election supervision?

and our last goal:

4) To do goals 1-3 so well that we can offer both the goals and results as a model to frustrated progressives across America.
