SOME GOOD LIBERAL BOOKS

The Truth, with Jokes by Al Franken

American Theocracy by Kevin Phillips - This deals with the issues of oil, radical religion and oil.

Kingdom Coming by Michelle Godberg - This is an excellent awakening to thee rise of Christian Nationalism America.

Static by Amy and David Goodman - This is a wonderful expose of the government lies and the supporting corporate controlled media.

The One Percent Doctrine by Ron Suskind - This is the Cheney theory that became policy and its affects.

Original Zinn by David Barsamian and Zinn - Enlightening conversations with Howard Zinn.

Crimes of War  by Robert Jay Lifton (editor) - This is a collection of essays and speeches, court cases etc that speak to the issue of war and violence. Remember Lifton from Viet Nam and WW!!.  He is as effective today.

Failed States by Noam Chomsky

Wealth and Democracy by Kevin Phillips - A good historical perspective on globalization and trend towards empire.

The Great Unraveling, losing our way in the new century by Paul Krugman - A collection of his writings… where we are and where we’re headed. One of several outstanding books.

War Talk by Arundhati Roy - Beautifully written; the emerging fascist state in India and the anatomy of a growing American empire. A short, enlightening read.

War is a Force that Gives us Meaning by Chris Hedges - A war correspondent reveals how easily we slip into a mentality of violence. He’s been there. A thought-provoking read, especially in these times.

Pigs at the Trough by Arianna Huffington - A quick,well-researched look at the hijacking of American democracy by special interests.

Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Erenriech - Sharp writing. Erenriech goes undercover and tries to make a living at various minimum-wage jobs. A biting condemnation of economic policies that deny hard-working Americans an adequate life.

A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn - This book tells the American story from the point of view of its poor, its factory workers and its minorities. Minutely documented, arguments well backed-up.

Lies and the lying liars who tell them by Al Franken - No one has more fun pointing out scary truths… how manipulated our media has become and how skillfully our leaders deceive us and control the fare.

Dude, Where’s my country? By Michael Moore - Author of Stupid White Men.  Funny, cutting, and to the point. Check out both books.

The New Nuclear Danger, George Bush’s military-industrial complex by Helen Caldicott - Outlines and documents the activities of powerful defense contractors and the consequences of their influence in our spending and in our foreign policy.

More Equal Than Others by Godfrey Hodgson - This book deals with economic and social polarization in America with cause & effect relating to politics, technology, immigration, gender, race, geography and the future.

After The Empire by Emmanuel Todd - An essay on the long term effects of American unilateralism that ends with it being one nation at par with Euro-Asia. Includes an analysis of the economic effects of a world that finds it can get along without the U.S.

Moyers on America by Bill Moyers - Nothing short of an aroused public can restrain the oligarchic state with an agenda that serves the few who will always increase their advantage at the expense of the people and the democracy itself.

Reason –why liberals will win America by Robert Reich - With reason, values, passion and organization the liberal agenda can win. It will take understanding that we can overcome the imposed paranoia of liberalism and that reason is for liberals, the issue of morality is not in the bedroom but the boardroom.

The Working Poor – Invisible in America by David K. Shipler - This is an excellent description of the condition of the working poor, with many living examples. He shatters by explaining to many stereotypes and the interrelating issues of poverty. He makes plain that solution is in terms of all issues, not solved singly.

The Exception to the Rulers by Amy Goodman - Recommended on the cover by Norm Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Arundhati Roy and Michael Moore; this book truly as the sub title indicates exposes the "oily" politicians, war profiteers, and the media that loves them. A great indictment of media and those in it with frightening stories not previously given press.

Any book by Noam Chomsky…

The Coming Anarchy, by Robert Kaplan - Not exactly a liberal book but a sobering and well-documented read and a good intellectual challenge to idealists trying to formulate a coherent foreign policy. We need to read outside our personal ideology. How marvelous if Republicans would read any of the books we’ve listed on this sheet
